Question 1

Do I need a 4x4 to drive in Costa Rica?

Accepted Answer

Not always, but a 4x4 is strongly recommended if you plan to visit beaches on unpaved roads, national parks like Rincon de la Vieja, or rural areas in Guanacaste. Main highways and most tourist routes are paved and accessible with a standard sedan or compact car.

Question 2

What documents do I need to rent a car in Costa Rica?

Accepted Answer

You need a valid passport, a driver's license from your home country (an international driver's permit is not required but accepted), and a major credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit.

Question 3

Is full coverage insurance mandatory when renting a car in Costa Rica?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Costa Rican law requires all rental cars to carry basic liability insurance (INS Marchamo). Rental companies offer additional coverage options — collision damage waiver (CDW), theft protection, and zero-deductible — which we strongly recommend for complete peace of mind.

Question 4

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Costa Rica?

Accepted Answer

The minimum age to rent a car in Costa Rica is 21 years old. Drivers under 25 may be subject to a young driver surcharge. There is no maximum age limit.

Question 5

Can I pick up a car at Liberia Airport (LIR) and drop it off at San José Airport (SJO)?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Payless Car Rental Costa Rica offers one-way rentals between our Liberia (LIR) and San José (SJO) airport locations. A one-way drop-off fee may apply. Contact us to confirm availability and pricing.

Question 6

How far is Liberia Airport from the main Guanacaste beaches?

Accepted Answer

Liberia Airport (LIR) is approximately 30–45 minutes from Tamarindo, 45–60 minutes from Playa Flamingo and Playa Conchal, and about 90 minutes from Nosara and Sámara. Having a rental car gives you direct access without depending on shuttles or tours.

Question 7

Do you offer child seats or baby seats with rental cars in Costa Rica?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Payless Car Rental Costa Rica offers child seats, booster seats, and infant seats as optional add-ons. We recommend reserving yours in advance to guarantee availability at pickup.

Question 8

Is driving in Costa Rica safe for tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes, driving in Costa Rica is safe for tourists with normal precautions. Main roads are generally in good condition, though rural and mountain routes can be narrow or unpaved. Drive during daylight hours when possible, carry your documents, and always lock the vehicle when parked.

Question 9

What type of car is best for a Costa Rica road trip?

Accepted Answer

For a mix of cities and beaches, a compact or mid-size sedan works well. If your itinerary includes national parks, mountain roads, or river crossings, choose a 4x4 SUV. For families or groups of 6–8, a 7-seater SUV or van is ideal.

Question 10

Does Payless Car Rental Costa Rica accept debit cards?

Accepted Answer

Debit cards are accepted for payment, but a major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) is required in the main driver's name to hold the security deposit at pickup.
