A $50 + tax one-way rental fee applies when the car is rented in SJO or Paseo Colón and returned in LIR, or vice versa. Pick up and drop off . All vehicles must be returned to one of our designated rental office locations. If a vehicle is returned to a location other than our official rental offices, an additional fee will apply. The fee will vary based on the distance and location of the return. Please contact our office for further details regarding the specific charge for returning the vehicle outside of our designated locations.

Returns are permitted at Liberia airport and San Jose airport in Costa Rica. A drop off fee of 50.00 USD, plus tax will apply.

For non-Costa Rican residents, rental must finish before customer has been in Costa Rica for 3 months. Proof of entry is required at time of rental. Long term rentals must renew their agreement every 30 days. 

The minimum rental period varies between 2 and 4 days, depending on the rental dates. Please check with our team or review your booking details to confirm the minimum rental period for your specific reservation. 

Costa Rican law requires children under 12 travel with child seats. The car seat will differ depending on the age and the weight of the child. Limited child seats and boosters are available. Please reserve prior to your arrival, the cost is $5 + tax per day.

Purchase of third party liability and roadside assistance is required as a condition of rental.

No airport taxes apply.

All vehicles are restricted for use within the boundaries of Costa Rica.

A full tank of fuel is provided at the time of rental and the vehicle should be returned with a full tank of gas to avoid additional charges. There are no refunds for unused gas.

Renter can cancel at any time prior to scheduled reservation date. On no-show, the first day of rental will be charged to client’s credit card.

Shuttle service provided from San Jose's International Airport (SJO) and Liberia International Airport (LIR). Agent will be waiting for customer outside the main terminal. Please call our office at +506-2430- 4647 to arrange pick up if agent is not found.

Minimum Age: 21. Age 21 to 24 - $15 + tax surcharge applies to renters between 21 and 24.

Three additional drivers permitted at an additional charge of $10 + tax per day (per additional driver). Minimum Age for Additional Drivers is 25. Spouses can drive without any additional charges.

Cash deposits and debit cards are not accepted. If you use a debit card without notifying the agent, please be aware that despite releasing your deposit, it may take up to a maximum of 90 days to return to your balance. Payless Car Rental Costa Rica accepts the following for rental deposits: VISA, Master Card, AMEX, Diners Club, JCB. In some cases, credit cards with gold status or higher will be required. 

The main driver must be in possession of a Credit Card in their own name and numbers printed or raised when picking up the car.

When TPL and CDW+ are purchased the deposit required is $500 plus the estimated amount of the rent. When TPL and CDW are purchased the deposit required is $1500 plus the estimated amount of the rent. When TPL is purchased without any form of CDW the deposit required is $3000 plus the estimated amount of the rent.

Third party liability insurance - purchase protects you against claims for injury you cause to third persons or property other than yourself. It does not cover you or the rented vehicle. It covers 80% of damage to third party. Purchase of liability insurance in the counter is mandatory at pickup time TPL + ALI+ extends the liability coverage up to 40 million colones per person and 100 million colones per accident. The minimum cost of third party liability t is 20.00 USD + tax per day not to exceed 25 USD + tax per day, depending on car group rented, for additional coverage information check with the counter upon arrival.

Supplemental Liability + Sedans
$8.00 + tax per day
When purchased with third party liability Sedans, it eliminates any deductible that may arise in relation to liability insurance. This coverage applies for sedan vehicles.

Supplemental Liability + 4WD & Vans
$12.00 + tax per day
When purchased with third party liability 4WD & Vans, it eliminates any deductible that may arise in relation to liability insurance. This coverage applies for SUV, 4WD, minivan and van.

CDW Sedans
The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) limits the responsibility of the client over the rented vehicle to a deductible of $1500 in case of accident or theft. This coverage applies for sedan vehicles.

CDW 4WD & Vans
$18.99 + tax per day
The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) limits the responsibility of the client over the rented vehicle to a deductible of $1500 in case of accident or theft. This coverage applies for SUV, 4WD, minivan and van. Minimum required protection for 11-12 passenger's vans.

CDW+ Sedans
$25.99 + tax per day
The CDW+ covers damages to the rented vehicle caused by accident, this coverage has no deductible. This coverage applies for sedan vehicles.

CDW+ 4WD & Vans
$29.99 + tax per day
The CDW+ covers damages to the rented vehicle caused by accident, this coverage has no deductible. This coverage applies for SUV, 4WD, minivan and van.

To decline our CDW when permitted written proof of CDW insurance from your insurance company or credit card company must be verified and specify that coverage is effective in Costa Rica for the vehicle type you are renting and the entire rental.

Our CDW will be required as a minimum protection for 11-12 passenger vans

Emergency Roadside Assistance

$1.99 + tax per day In the event something happens to the rented vehicle, the renter will receive assistance anywhere in the country and if necessary, Payless Car Rental will provide a replacement vehicle.
This service is mandatory, it cannot be declined.

NEGLIGENT DRIVING OR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR DRUGS VOIDS ANY COVERAGE (CDW, CDW+, TPL or SLI), ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET ACCORDING TO THE CONTRACT.

GPS are available at $10.00 + tax per day. Portable WiFi devices are available at $10.00 + tax per day. Limited quantities are available. Please reserve prior to your arrival.

Customer must present a valid, unexpired Driver's license which includes a photograph of the customer. Digital or temporary licenses are not accepted. The driver's license must be valid for the entire rental period and in good conditions. If the home country license is in a language that the letters are not Roman based alphabet like Russian, Japanese, Arabic, etc. An International Driver's Permit is required. Proof of entry is required at time of rental, (passport entry stamp), citizens must present official ID (cédula).

Customer is responsible for all toll fees, congestion charges, speeding tickets, parking fines &traffic fines and all associated administration costs.
